Conversations on and around technology are no longer just about innovation—they’re about inclusion. World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD), celebrated every year on May 17, highlights how information and communication technologies (ICTs) can accelerate social progress and bridge inequality gaps.
This year’s theme, “Enhancing Equality in Our Society with AI in Communications,” hits especially close to home for us at Digify Africa. It aligns directly with our mission: to equip African youth with accessible, relevant, and empowering digital skills—using tools they already know and trust. And leading the way is our latest innovation: Ed.
Meet the DigiBot. – AI Meets WhatsApp for Accessible Learning
The DigiBot is our reimagined WhatsApp-based learning platform—a conversational, AI-powered tool designed to bring education to the fingertips of underserved communities. The DigiBot gives our digital skills bots like Kitso (digital safety), Lesedi (digital literacy), and Lwazi (budgeting and investing) a cohesive voice and a human-centred identity.
Why WhatsApp? Because it’s already everywhere.
With over 90% smartphone penetration among South African youth and WhatsApp as the most used communication app across the continent, we’ve flipped the traditional learning model on its head. The DigiBot meets learners where they are—literally—in their pockets, on their phones, with no extra downloads, data-heavy videos, or intimidating user interfaces.
Equality Through Conversational AI
AI isn’t just a buzzword in the DigiBot—it’s the enabler. Through smart, contextual learning flows, the DigiBot offers self-paced, interactive training that feels like chatting with a coach, not cramming for an exam. It tailors content for youth with different learning needs and helps scale high-quality education without the need for costly infrastructure.
More importantly, the DigiBot levels the playing field:
- No Wi-Fi? No problem. Ed. works entirely on low-bandwidth mobile connections.
- No jargon. Just real-world skills—from how to spot financial scams to how to run a paid ad campaign.
- No gatekeeping. All content is free and youth-focused.
Real Impact. Real People
Since its rollout, the DigiBot and its ecosystem of learning bots have reached thousands of young people across South Africa, helping them gain practical digital skills, improve their digital literacy, and become smarter, wiser and more informed digital citizens.
🟢 Empowering the Future, One Chat at a Time
At Digify Africa, we believe that the future of education in Africa is not built in classrooms—it’s built in conversations. By combining AI with the power of mobile messaging, the DigiBot. isn’t just teaching digital skills. It’s rewriting the rules of access, equity, and empowerment in the information society.
So, to celebrate World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, we’re proud to be part of the movement to use AI in communication not just to innovate, but to include.
